Balancing Career and Motherhood: Mental Health Tips for Women

If you are a working mother who feels like you are always behind, always tired, and never quite doing enough at work or at home, you are not imagining it. Balancing a career and motherhood asks a lot of anyone, and the mental load involved is real, even when it is invisible to everyone else.

Recent survey data reported by Forbes suggests that as many as four in ten working mothers have been diagnosed with anxiety, depression, or both, a rate notably higher than the general population. Understanding why this happens, and what actually helps, can make the difference between surviving this season and burning out completely.

Why This Combination Is So Draining

Working motherhood is not just two full-time jobs stacked on top of each other. It also includes what is often called the "mental load," the constant behind-the-scenes tracking of appointments, schedules, school forms, meals, and everyone's emotional needs, on top of professional responsibilities.

This mental load rarely shows up on a to-do list, which makes it easy for others to underestimate and easy for a mother to dismiss her own exhaustion as simply not managing time well enough. In reality, the demand on attention and emotional bandwidth is significant, and chronic, and it takes a toll over time.

Signs the Toll Is Becoming Too Much

  • Feeling irritable or short-tempered in ways that feel out of character

  • Guilt that follows you at work for not being home, and at home for not being working

  • Difficulty being present with your children even when you are physically there

  • Losing interest in things that used to bring you joy or relaxation

  • Physical symptoms like headaches, fatigue, or trouble sleeping that do not improve with rest

  • A sense that you have lost your identity outside of "mom" and "employee"

What Actually Helps

Naming the mental load out loud. Many partners are willing to take on more but do not see the invisible labor until it is named specifically. Being direct about what needs to be shared, rather than hoping it will be noticed, tends to work better than silently resenting the imbalance.

Lowering the bar on purpose. Perfectionism at work and at home is often what pushes working mothers past their limit. Deciding in advance which things genuinely need to be done well, and which can be done adequately, protects energy for what matters most.

Protecting small pockets of time for yourself. Even fifteen minutes that belong only to you, not spent catching up on chores, matters more than it sounds like it should for maintaining a sense of self.

Talking to someone who is not inside the situation. A partner, friend, or therapist who can hear the full picture, rather than getting only the version you manage to explain in passing, often helps you see your own situation more clearly.

Therapy. For many working mothers, individual therapy provides a rare space that is entirely about them, not about managing everyone else. It can also help address underlying anxiety, depression, or unresolved perfectionism that make the balancing act harder than it needs to be.
