Signs you may benefit from trauma therapy
Trauma can show up right after a difficult event, or it can surface years later. If any of the following sound familiar, therapy can help:
-
Flashbacks, intrusive memories, or nightmares connected to a past event
-
Feeling on edge, easily startled, or constantly scanning for danger
-
Avoiding people, places, or situations that bring up painful memories
-
Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected from yourself or the people around you
-
Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships
-
Panic or intense distress triggered by reminders of what happened
-
Children showing new fears, regression, or reenactment through play after a hard event
-
Trauma linked to a single incident, such as an accident, assault, or medical crisis
-
Complex trauma from childhood neglect, abuse, or an unstable home
-
Trauma symptoms occurring alongside anxiety, depression, or substance use
Trauma responses are the nervous system doing what it was built to do: protect you. With the right support, those responses can soften, and your sense of safety can return.
How we treat trauma and PTSD
No two trauma histories are the same, so treatment is matched to what happened, how it shows up now, and your goals for healing. Because trauma often overlaps with anxiety and depression, many of our trauma therapists are also trained in treating those conditions.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Trauma-focused CBT addresses the thought patterns, self-blame, and avoidance that often develop after a traumatic experience. It helps clients process what happened and reduce the grip that memories and triggers hold over daily life.
Exposure Therapy for Children and Adults
A structured, gradual approach that helps reduce avoidance and rebuild a sense of safety around trauma reminders. For children, it is adapted through play and family involvement. Learn more about our exposure therapy for children and adults.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT builds skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. It is especially helpful when trauma comes with intense emotions, dissociation, or difficulty staying grounded. Several of our therapists hold DBT certifications.
Trauma-Informed, Person-Centered Care
Every therapist at CT Counseling Group approaches trauma work at the client's own pace. Safety and trust come first, before any deeper processing begins. This approach respects that healing is not linear and looks different for everyone.
Expressive Arts Therapy
For clients, especially teens and children, who process trauma more easily through creative expression than direct conversation, expressive arts offer another route toward healing and self-understanding.
Play Therapy for Young Children
Young children often cannot describe what happened to them in words. Play therapy gives them a developmentally appropriate way to process fear, confusion, and loss.
Who we treat
We provide trauma and PTSD therapy for individuals at every stage of life, as well as for couples and families affected by trauma.
Children (Ages 3 and Up)
Behavioral changes, new fears, sleep disruption, and regression following a difficult event, treated with play therapy and other approaches suited to a child's age and development.
Teens and Adolescents
Trauma related to bullying, loss, family disruption, or a frightening event, addressed with approaches that respect a teen's need for both support and independence.
Young Adults
Trauma tied to earlier life experiences that resurfaces during college, career changes, or new relationships, supported with practical, goal-oriented therapy.
Adults
PTSD, complex trauma, and single-incident trauma from accidents, assaults, medical crises, or loss, treated with CBT, DBT, exposure therapy, and other evidence-based methods.
Couples
Trauma that affects trust, intimacy, or communication between partners, addressed through couples-focused sessions that support both people in the relationship.
Families
Family sessions that help households understand and respond to a family member's trauma, and rebuild a sense of stability at home.
Women's Mental Health
Specialized support for trauma related to birth experiences, postpartum mental health, and reproductive health. Visit our women's mental health page for more.
